Speaker 4 of The Change Chats 26th April is Pete Prediger of @takeahikefdn Pete has dedicated over 13 years to supporting the youth at Take A Hike. He has worn many hats during this time, therapist, outdoor guide and now director of operations. Take A Hike isn't just any school, it uses the outdoors to give youth, who the mainstream education system let down, a second chance. This picture is the students at school on a 7 day canoe trip. Having been the co-director for @greenpeace Global Climate and Energy Program, Co-founder of ForestEthics, and was even featured as one of the experts on @leonardodicaprio documentary '11th Hour'. Update on #mywastechallenge @rachiepbd and I managed to go 1 week at first with the jar (our household waste). We looked through what was in there. Made some changes. And have now gone 13 days (with a little space still). What did we change? Processed food nearly always comes in packaging. We realised nearly all of our packaging was from comfort foods and snacks. While we haven't fully cut these out, we've reduced them and reduced our waste a little. We've also seen that being out of the city makes reducing your waste much harder. In Vancouver there was lots more options to buy things package free. Not many cities are like Vancouver. So while it might not be realistic for many people to go zero waste. We also dont have to sit and wait for our governments and large organisations to provide package free options, we can meet them half way. By choosing to buy just one less item of single use plastic today we have created less plastic waste in the world tomorrow and that's a good place to start. Adam Corneil is one of those speakers. His talk "Its not waste, it's just wasted" will cover his journey to being the founder of Unbuilders. An innovative DEconstructuon company focused on doing things differently. Adam saw the waste that was being created in the construction world and set about changing that. His company offers an alternative to the usual demolish where 90% of materials go to landfill. They take houses apart bit by bit, and actually salvage 90% of the materials. You may have seen on the news that a recent study on microplastic found it "absolutely everywhere" including every mammal they tested. Which pretty much means it's in you and I too. It's pretty depressing stuff. . It's easy to hear this type of news and think there's no point trying to do anything as we're already fucked. Which doesn't really get us anywhere other than feeling more depressed. . I can't do much as one person but what I can do is attempt to reduce my own waste. None of us are perfect and going fully zero waste isn't realistic for most (including me). But, if everything stays the same and I reduce my own waste by just a small amount then there is still less waste in the world then if I did nothing. And that feels quite positive. . So here is a challenge if you want to feel like you're doing something. 1. Get a jar (so you can see the waste you create) 2. Put the date on it. 3. See how many days it takes to fill.(doesn't matter if it's just one day) 4. Take a look at the waste you create. 5. Try to go a day longer next time. 6. Repeat. (And if you can share it online and get someone else to do the same you'll double your efforts 😉) Good luck #mywastechallenge

I havent climbed a tree in years. Today I came across a beauty and felt the urge to become a kid again and get climbing. Sooo much fun and a healthy dose of scaring myself, cutting my hands and getting filthy. . There's something quite magical about playing in a tree. I think there's a reason it's every kids favourite thing to do. Note to self. Climb more trees. 🤳@rachiepbd

Get your squat on. . If you've ever spent time travelling outside the "West" or spent time around kids you'll recognise this pose. Kids can sit in the resting squat for ages. If they don't stop doing it they still do it when they're old, which is why we often see people in developing countries (who are arguably much more connected to nature) still doing it comfortably. . Unfortunately, with the invention of the chair, the squat went out of fashion and with it our mobility. There's numerous benefits to maintaining the squat: 1. To be able to do it your feet, ankles, knees and hips must all be functioning properly. It's a great indicator if you can't squat that something needs addressing. . 2. It helps with digestion and proper alignment of your spine and all the inside bits. . 3. It is so much better for you than sitting in a chair. You may have heard that sitting is the new smoking. Well squatting is basically the nicotine patch to ease you off the chair . 4 years ago I couldn't get remotely close to what you see in this pic. For me my hips were the problem. They were tight from lots of running and not enough stretching. But, with a little bit more stretching, practising the squat with heels lifted, and doing it often I'm slowly catching up with my 3 year old self. . Moral of the story. Sit less. Squat more. And smile in pics more 😐
