Changemaker – Narayana Peesapathy
If you are someone who has been trying to reduce your waste it can be disheartening to see that a lot of people still choose to use single use plastic products. I find society’s willingness to use something once that will potentially be on the planet for 50+ years a very strange trade off.
One of the worst of the single use offenders is the plastic cutlery. Millions of these are used each year and the majority end up going straight to land fill. While there are some new alternatives to plastic that are becoming more and more common such as plant starched based products it is encouraging to see the solution offered by Narayana Peesapathy from India.
Narayana founded the company Bakeys Edible Cutlery. Which, as you may have guessed, makes fully edible plant based cutlery that can be used and then eaten afterwards. He says he can make them cheaper than the plastic alternative too. In an ideal world everyone would just use cutlery again and again and we would move away from this throw away culture we have adopted. However, I think we are a way off this change so for now it is uplifting to see the solutions offered by people like Narayana.
